A 200-year-old wooden dice game that quietly turns into addition practice
Shut the Box™ is the wooden tabletop classic — a polished beech-wood tray with hinged number flaps from 1 to 9 (or 1 to 10 on this set), and two small dice. Roll the dice; close any combination of flaps that adds up to your roll; pass the dice when you can’t close any more. The first person to shut every flap wins. Kids learn addition without ever knowing they’re doing maths.

How to use
- Open all the number flaps so they’re standing upright.
- Roll the two dice. Close any combination of flaps that adds up to your roll. (Roll a 7? Close the 7, or 6+1, or 5+2, or 4+3, or 4+2+1.)
- Roll again. Keep closing flaps until you can’t make your roll any more.
- Pass the dice. Lowest score (sum of remaining open flaps) at the end of the round wins. Or: first to close every flap wins outright.
